Winnebago-Boone Farm Bureau partnered with Blackhawk Fire Protection District to host a Large Animal Rescue Awareness (LARA) training provided by the Illinois Fire Service Institute from 8 a.m. to Noon on Saturday March 24th at Blackhawk Fire located at 3738 S. Main St., Rockford.
The course focused on the purpose of large animal rescue; incident prevention and evacuation planning; understanding animal behavior (normal and under stress); humane handling of large animals; understanding large animal restraint; large animal scene management; water and unstable ground rescues (e.g. mud & ice); containment & capture of loose large animals; trailer and transport incidents and barn and wild land fires. Farm Bureau provided breakfast and lunch through the IFB Farm Safety Grant. 16 Emergency Responders and livestock owners attended. One to three inches of snow was forecasted for that day, which I feel impacted the attendance. The event was co-sponsored by the Illinois Farm Bureau and COUNTRY Financial.
